Welcome to the Orchestra Page
Introduction The Brisbane Recorder Orchestra was formed in 2019 so that we can enjoy playing and performing with other like-minded musicians - and to provide a path, particularly for serious amateur players to perform in a large group. Canberra is the only other Recorder Orchestra in Australia that we are aware of, however there are dozens of Recorder Orchestras across Europe and the US. Confident players of Alto instruments or lower, with previous musical training are invited to contact the organiser Joanne McDiarmid. Details are below and Registration is essential.
The Conductor is the acclaimed performer Kathleen Williams-Devries who began musical life as a recorder player before transitioning to clarinet. She holds undergraduate and Masters degrees from the Queensland Conservatorium and a year on exchange with the Royal College of Music London. She has played with the Queensland and Australian Youth Orchestras, was selected for the World Youth Orchestra, and played professionally with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She has played concertos with the Conservatorium Symphony, Queensland Symphony Orchestra as a finalist in the instrumental section of the ABC Young Performer’s Awards and the Harlow Symphony Orchestra in the UK. In 2000 she placed second in the International Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition.
She began playing recorder again in 2013 and has played with Brisbane Baroque Players, Queensland Baroque and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra on this instrument. An interest in early clarinet has also led to her playing the chalumeau and an 1840s boxwood classical clarinet both of which she has played at various venues including regularly at Albert St Uniting Church and for the Early Music Society.
